Green Event
Montepio Cascais Half Marathon again as a Green Event!
HMS Sports has assumed, throughout its activity, a commitment to continuous evolution and improvement, which has included the implementation of measures to reduce the environmental impact of the sporting events it holds.
It was one of the great innovations of the 3rd edition and returns this year with the ambition of reinforcing measures to protect the environment, in a work developed with the Municipality of Cascais and the event's partners.
Sporting events have involved the use of plastic materials and packaging in large quantities, which represent a challenge for the collection and treatment of waste. But that's not all: there are problems with mobility, carbon dioxide emissions and, above all, with the education of workers, employees and participants.
In this context, we have established a sustainability plan that will seek to implement intervention measures in four critical environmental areas:
- 1 - logistics and communication
- 2 - mobility and transport
- 3 - reduction and reuse of materials
- 4 - awareness and pedagogy
The responsibility of a sports organizer like HMS Sports is to ensure that messages transmitted to this audience before, during and after the event have a positive impact on society.
It is also important to recognize that organizing a sport event has a significant environmental impact and it is possible to improve and reduce the footprint of each event. Thus, HMS Sports intends to be an example of environmental policies to follow, while at the same time seeks to be in harmony with one of the biggest concerns of its public: the environment.
The sustainability plan for the event is being drawn up with the event's partners.
Measures to be applied in the 9th edition of the Montepio Cascais Half Marathon
- reduction of plastic bags for t-shirts, race bibs, pins, starter kits, race packets;
- elimination of paper promotional leaflets;
- reduction of paper consumption;
- communication with athletes through digital mailings;
- promotional leaflets from partners replaced by electronic vouchers;
- replacement of the acrylic trophy with plants for the top three male and female teams;
- delivery of a reusable bag in the race packet;
- reduced travelling with advance planning;
- encouraging the use of public transportation to the event;
- use of public compact power distributors;
- use and reinforcement of differentiated containers from the Municipality of Cascais and Sociedade Ponto Verde to separate waste and promote recycling at the start and finish lines and at the supply points available along the route;
- reuse of graphic material produced in previous editions.
